Do objects weigh more in water or out of water?

Yesterday in science, we tested the impact of upthrust on objects. Most of the class predicted that the object would weigh more in the water due to 'water weighing it down' or the object potentially absorbing some water. However, our results showed that the object was actually lighter in water - we then discussed how this was due to the force of upthrust pushing the object up!
