We compared kitchen roll, blue paper roll from the dining room, paper towels and tissues to see which was the most absorbent.  We dangled strips of each of these materials into water for 5 seconds and then measured to see how far up the strip the water had been absorbed.  We had slightly different results but most of us found that the kitchen roll was the most absorbent.
